Professor JigerJanabel,the director of the New Vision, Eurasian Research Center, Kazakhstan , came to the School of Management on the afternoon of March 29, 2019 (Friday)at the invitation of Institute for China Neighboring Economics of University of Shanghai for Science and technology.He gave a lecture to the teachers and students of ICNE on the topic of “Analysis of the trend of the country's major policies after the Kazakhstan regimechange and its potential impact on the prospects of China-Kazakhstan cooperation relationship.”
First of all, Professor JigerJanabel gave a brief introduction to Kazakhstan's national conditions, and believed that for the 3.19 Kazakhstan regime change, the Chinese domestic media reported positively on this matter, perhaps most of them,with friendly wishes to neighboring countries. However, he turned his words and said that the international media outside of Kazakhstan and China had different reports on the matter, and there were many mixed speculations. Then, Professor JigerJanabel talked about his own views on the historical background of Kazakhstan’s former President Nazarbayev’s“returning and re-employing”. He asserted that the abdication of the president was intended to reassure the opposition forces, Consolidate the achievements and the family rights alternately. The reason why he was re-employed was becauseNazarbayev weakened the presidential power while serving as the strengthened chairman of the National Security Council, thus ensuring that the pre-president can monitor the country at any time.
Finally, Professor JigerJanabel had a lively interaction with the teachers and students who participated in the lecture. He greatly appreciated the in-depth questions of teachers and students, and gave his own wonderful views on the questions. The heated discussion at the lectures was exciting and the students have a strong interest in learning this matter.
The lecturer, Mr. JigerJanabel, received his doctor's degree in history from Harvard University (1998) and worked for the UNHCR (Kazakhstan Branch) and Kazakh petroleum co. LTD. Since 2007, he has been employed as an adjunct professor by many universities in Almaty City. He mainly teaches the history of Central Asia, the big country game after the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the geopolitics of Central Asia, especially the history of international relations between Kazakhstan and China. He was promoted to the director of international relations think tank of Kazakhstan: Senior Fellow of the New Vision, Eurasian Research Center, Kazakhstan at the end of 2018. After the lecture, Mr. Jiger was also hired as a special professor of ICNE.
