Professor Wei Jingfu delivered a Report on "The 2nd China-ASEAN Development and Governance Forum"

The 2nd China-ASEAN Development and Governance Forum, co-sponsored by the ASEAN research center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the ASEAN research center of Kunming University of Science and Technology, was held in Wuhan on September 15, 2019. Representatives of universities and government agencies from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Myanmar and other countries, as well as the China Development Research Foundation, Peking University, The City University of Hong Kong, the University of British Columbia and other relevant research institutions at home and abroad, gathered to work together. The three main themes: public governance in ASEAN countries , poverty reduction and development, climate and energy cooperation were hotly discussed.

Professor Wei Jingfu, director of Institute for China Neighboring EconomiesICNEof University of Shanghai for Science and Technology(USST), was invited to attend the forum and delivered a keynote speech in the morning  entitled "The evolution of economic and trade roles between China and Japan -- an investigation of tripartite relations with ASEAN". He appealed to the experts to pay attention to the economic and trade forms between China and Japan in ASEAN, and reviewed the evolution of the economic and trade roles between China,Japan and ASEAN with detailed data from the perspectives of commodity trade, direct investment and industrial transfer.Professor Wei said that the steady and sustained growth of demand from ASEAN countries for the export scale of consumer goods from China and Japan is of great significance to improve ASEAN's position in the Asia-Pacific market and the global industrial chain. He also pointed out that considering the different industrial characteristics and focus differences in the economic and trade exchanges between China,Japan and ASEAN countries, cooperation should be sought in the competition, and only by continuing the competition in the cooperation could the result of triple-win or multi-win be realized. The atmosphere at the meeting was warm, and many experts expressed strong interest in focusing on the observation perspective of economic competition and cooperation between Asian economic giants (China and Japan) in ASEAN.
