On July 9, 2021, Professor Ye Ying, the initiator of the China Industrial Internet Summit Forum ( the former director of Shanghai Baoshan District Economic and Information Committee and the former curator of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology Library ), was invited to be a guest at the Institute for China Neighboring Economics and gave a report with the theme of Reading and Life for teachers and students.

Professor Ye started from A Brief History of Time and pointed out that just because the earth and human beings are small, we must look at the world from a macro perspective and a broader pattern so that life is meaningful. At the same time, he emphasized that it is necessary for young people to look at the development of things with a critical eye and the idea of exploring the truth. He also reminds young students to observe the world from a micro perspective and to combine their own experiences in scientific research to determine their research interests and directions.

Professor Ye talked jovially that a person should first be interested in the things around him and natural and social phenomena, and then he can become an interesting person. Therefore, whether analyzing the world from a macro or micro perspective, people cannot do without continuous learning and continuous change. He believes that, as graduate students, apart from books and literature on economics, masterpieces on politics, history, geography, science and etc. should not be neglected. Only by understanding the world from multiple angles and levels, and learning thoroughly, can we clarify the direction and positioning of our self-development. In this way, we can finally combine theory and practice to change the world and make it a better place.

Of course, Professor Ye doesn't think that reading is all about life, and he warned the students that a life of reading alone is not good for health. He said that people's body and mind should be synchronized, and as students, we should participate actively in sports and social activities. If a student graduates with professional knowledge, a strong sense of cooperation, and the ability to learn by analogy, he will have a bright future in life.
